A well-established and growing US EPC is seeking an experienced Substation Estimator. This role focuses on supporting EPC and general contracting bids for medium and high-voltage transmission, distribution, and substation projects across North America. The position is ideal for a professional with strong electrical infrastructure experience who can balance technical expertise with commercial insight to help secure and deliver successful projects. This role is based in Houston.

Role Overview
The Substation Estimator will be responsible for developing detailed cost estimates for engineering, procurement, and construction services. This includes analyzing drawings, specifications, and project data to forecast material, labor, and equipment requirements. The position involves working closely with engineering, project management, procurement, and subcontracting teams to ensure accurate, competitive, and timely proposals. A key measure of success will be winning and supporting profitable work while ensuring compliance with client and contract requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for EPC and GC substation and transmission projects.
  • Interpret and analyze technical drawings, blueprints, and documents to calculate quantities and scope.
  • Quantify cost factors, including materials, subcontracting, production time, and labor.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate conditions, collect data on resources needed, and verify constructability.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and supply chain partners to ensure comprehensive and competitive estimates.
  • Lead subcontractor outreach, prepare takeoffs, and evaluate competitive proposals.
  • Provide input to project execution teams on scope, budgets, and constructability considerations.
  • Track projects, bids, and awarded work to monitor performance ratios and profitability.
  • Consult with management to review estimates, resolve budget issues, and adjust projections.
  • Assist in scope writing, reviewing contract changes, and negotiating change orders.
  • Ensure all estimates and project documentation are completed accurately and in line with company standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in medium- and high-voltage substation and transmission construction.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical construction drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of EPC methodology and industry standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and estimating tools (e.g., Bluebeam).
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience estimating EPC substation and transmission projects.
  • Knowledge of civil and electrical construction estimates, including distribution lines and related infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with market practices, pricing trends, and subcontractor negotiations in the utility sector.
