Senior Design Engineer – Community Solar / Renewable Energy

Location: Remote with 10% travel, with a preference for Wisconsin and surrounding Midwest states

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join a growing renewable energy engineering team focused on community solar, solar PV, BESS, and broader renewable construction projects. This role supports distributed generation projects across the central U.S., with work spanning conceptual design through detailed engineering and construction support for ground-mount systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for a self-driven engineer with strong NEC knowledge, solid electrical design experience, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with internal teams, project managers, field personnel, and external developers.

What You’ll Do

• Perform electrical power, PV system design, and low-voltage engineering tasks for renewable construction projects.
• Produce and review AutoCAD drawings, single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, cable routing, grounding design, and site layouts.
• Carry out QA/QC reviews of design packages and technical deliverables.
• Review RFIs and provide clear technical responses.
• Draft proposals, specifications, and engineering documentation.
• Support feasibility assessments and capacity studies using PVsyst or similar tools.
• Perform or support cable ampacity and trench design using tools such as CYMCAP, ETAP, or AmpCalc.
• Support grounding system modelling using WinIGS or similar software.
• Work cross-functionally with project managers, field teams, and developers.
• Participate in customer and project interviews.
• Provide guidance to junior engineers and designers and support team development.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and design innovation.
• Ensure technical accuracy and compliance across design deliverables and construction activities.

What We’re Looking For

• 6+ years of electrical engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related discipline.
• Strong understanding of NEC requirements.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience is valuable.
• Experience with PVcase and/or PVsyst preferred.
• Familiarity with CYMCAP, ETAP, AmpCalc, and WinIGS strongly valued.
• Background in solar PV, community solar, BESS, distributed generation, or related electrical design.
• Experience delivering electrical design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Exposure to utility connections, inspector coordination, and construction support is beneficial.
• PE licence preferred but not required.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, ownership-driven mindset.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and taking responsibility for deliverables.
• Able to work typical hours Monday to Friday, with flexibility for business needs.
• Willingness to travel circa 10%.
