Commercial Project Manager – Solar PV & Energy Storage

A growing renewable energy business in Hawaii is seeking an experienced Commercial Project Manager to support the delivery of commercial solar PV and PV-plus-storage projects. This is a high-impact role for someone with strong organisational skills, a collaborative approach, and a genuine commitment to seeing projects through from concept to closeout.

The Commercial Project Manager will support both operational and programmatic activity across the business, with responsibility for managing projects successfully on schedule, within budget, and in full accordance with contractual requirements. The role will involve regular interaction with senior leadership, customers, vendors, subcontractors, and field teams.

Role Overview

This position sits within the commercial team and plays a central role in the delivery of photovoltaic and energy storage projects. The successful candidate will help manage project documentation, schedules, budgets, contracts, procurement, permitting, reporting, and customer communication while supporting both office-based and field-based activities.

Key Responsibilities

General duties

• Work closely with senior leadership and the commercial superintendent.
• Track time spent on each project accurately.
• Maintain organised project files in both electronic and hard copy formats.
• Supervise and mentor junior project support staff where applicable.
• Maintain a flexible work pattern across office, jobsite, and remote settings.

Project design support

• Review existing plans or site documentation to help develop PV project concepts aligned with EPC, PPA, or LOI requirements.
• Collaborate with internal engineering support and customers to advance conceptual design.
• Coordinate with external engineering partners to ensure designs align with utility and county permitting requirements.
• Support development of site plans, equipment layouts, and single-line diagrams.

Project management

• Review budgets and drawings to identify risks, issues, and improvement opportunities.
• Translate development budgets into an operations-ready format suitable for project controls.
• Support HECO interconnection applications and utility agreement processes.
• Work with third-party reviewers and county authorities to secure project permits.
• Partner with leadership to develop the commercial installation plan.
• Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
• Keep customers and leadership informed through schedules, progress updates, and look-ahead planning.
• Maintain reporting and project documentation in construction management systems.
• Track costs and manage project budgets accurately.
• Coordinate material and equipment procurement with vendors.
• Prepare and manage purchase orders, subcontracts, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and daily reports.
• Review timesheets and track labour hours.
• Coordinate with the superintendent to keep drawings current and record as-built revisions.

Construction management

• Visit project sites regularly to coordinate with field teams.
• Review work for quality and compliance with contract documents and issued plans.
• Document construction progress with photographs and site records.

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3–5 years of project management experience, ideally in construction, electrical, or renewable energy.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, schedules, and subcontractors across multiple projects.
• Experience with construction management software such as Procore or similar.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid Hawaii driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
• Legal authorisation to work in the United States.

Preferred

• Experience with commercial solar PV and/or BESS projects.
• Familiarity with HECO interconnection requirements and Hawaii permitting processes.
• PMP certification.
• OSHA 30-Hour certification.
• NABCEP credential.
• Experience with ClickUp and TSheets.
