Climate17 is delighted to be working with an established civil engineering business as they look to recruit an Environmental Manager to lead the company’s environmental and sustainability strategy and ensure they remain a leading and trusted contractor in the North West. They work on a wide range of heavy infrastructure projects from airports maintenance to highways and water projects to renewables projects. As such, this role would suit someone who’s also worked on large, complex infrastructure projects and thrives working on site, liaising with both internal and external stakeholders and ensuring best practice across the business.

This is a new role, established as a result of organic growth and you will be responsible for leading on environmental and sustainability initiatives across the business, so maintaining and improving the Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO14001, the Energy Management System in accordance with ISO50001 and maintaining the PAS2080 certification. In addition, you’ll be required to work to clients’ decarbonisation and Net Zero targets and working to reduce pollution and minimise waste. Any environmental incidents will be investigated by you, and you will lead any subsequent training to ensure a culture of best practice and ensure everyone knows what needs to be done.

Your experience of environmental reporting will be beneficial as you’ll be the main point of contact in this role and you’ll liaise with stakeholders on issues such as biodiversity net gain, carbon reporting and resource efficiency. You’ll also be the main point of contact for external regulators such as The Environment Agency on permits, licences and consents.

It’s expected that you will be a Lead Auditor for ISO14001, you’ll have experience of PAS2080 and ISO50001, you’ll be knowledgeable on legislation relevant to highways and drainage and in particular, you’ll have a thorough understanding of water management and silt control techniques for sewer works and deep drainage. In addition, you’ll hold a relevant environmental degree as well as being a Practitioner Member of ISEP (or equivalent). It will also be your responsibility to keep abreast of developments to the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and new biodiversity legislation, so that you can update not only your Manager, but clients as well.

Part of your role will be to mentor graduates and apprentices but there are no direct line reports initially…this may change in time however, so it’s good if you wish to develop this skill in the future or if you have prior experience of having managed more junior team members.

The organisation has two offices in the North West, one in Manchester and the other in Leeds and you can be based in either and then travel to sites as and when is required. As such, you will require a full and valid driving license and a willingness to travel as and when required, together with a CSCS card.

So, if you feel you possess the skills and experience required for this role and you would like to find out more, please contact Katie Pereira at katie@climate17.com for an informal conversation.
