Role: BESS Commissioning Engineer – Commercial & Industrial Projects
Location: Honolulu, HI ideal or US mainland remote (30% travel required)
Reports to: VP of Operations
Type: Full-time, permanent
Salary and benefits: $90,000 to $120,000/year (DOE) + bonus + good benefits package. Relocation offered for those interested.
Join a dynamic and collaborative boutique team advancing Hawaii's clean energy goals through battery storage and hybrid systems. You'll handle end-to-end commissioning for commercial BESS installations, ensuring seamless integration, performance, and compliance from startup to handover.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop and execute site-specific test plans, including pre-functional checks, functional verification, and performance runs (e.g., charge/discharge cycles, efficiency testing).
- Load, validate, and troubleshoot protection settings, controls (relays, inverters, PCS), BMS/EMS parameters, and SCADA/telemetry integration (Modbus, DNP3).
- Perform hands-on testing with tools like meggers, torque wrenches, IR cameras, and multimeters; diagnose issues in power systems, networking, and firmware.
- Manage non-conformance reports, punch lists, and corrective actions with OEMs and subs.
- Coordinate outages, permits, and witness tests with utilities and authorities; support PV/inverter integration on hybrid sites.
- Deliver comprehensive documentation (test reports, as-builts, backups) and train operations teams.
- Champion safety protocols (LOTO, arc-flash, JSA) and compliance with NEC, NFPA, UL standards.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- 3–7 years in BESS, inverter, or MV power commissioning/field engineering (C&I scale preferred).
- Proficiency with test equipment, SLDs/wiring diagrams, protection relays (SEL/GE), and protocols like Modbus TCP/RTU.
- NFPA 70E, OSHA-10/30 certified; able to travel 20+%, work at heights/confined spaces, and hold a valid driver's license.
Preferred Skills
- Utility interconnection (e.g., HECO-like processes), PV commissioning, EMS/historian tools.
- Certifications: NETA II/III, NICET, SEL University, First Aid/CPR.
