Our client is a fast-growing energy & climate think tank, finding innovative ways to use data to end the use of coal - the most important way to tackle the climate change crisis. You'll be joining a well-respected team that is already having a global impact in tackling climate change, with recent policy wins from their expert analysts in Poland, the UK, India, and Turkey.

As the organisation expands internationally the company needs a talented Senior Data Engineer who will take ownership of their core electricity generation and emission data. This role will guide the data team to improve and expand the data and make it easily accessible. Data can help change the world, and your role to use data to track the global electricity transition is critical. The broader team - and key stakeholders, especially campaign groups, politicians and academics - turn the data into action, to impact the speed of the electricity transition. The company's data team is growing, and this role would provide knowledge, ideas and experience into the broader team as a peer, with potential to manage a team in the future.

For this role you need to be UK-based with the ability to attend meetings in London as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the running and maintenance of the company's core global electricity data and the data architecture.
  • Own the expansion plan for the core data.
  • Implement that expansion plan, working with the data team to scrape and host the data in the most efficient and reliable way.
  • Work with the whole team to make sure the core data is visualised impactfully.
  • Ensure the data is easily and reliably accessible to external stakeholders.

Must have

  • Demonstrable experience owning end-to-end data processes.
  • Strong skills in one or more relevant languages (e.g., Python, SQL, R, JavaScript).
  • Experience in database management.
  • Experience in data strategy and project management.
  • Proactive and delivery-focused.
  • Strong team collaboration.
  • A passion for creating open data to tackle climate change.

Great to have

  • Interest in leading a small data team in the future.
  • Interest and experience in data visualisation
  • Experience in building and maintaining a public API.
  • Electricity data experience.
