Climate17 are excited to be working with an international renewable energy developer, which specialises in developing off-site solar and battery energy storage projects, that are connected directly to large industrial power users (‘IPU’s), providing a supply of renewable electricity, energy security, price security, financial savings and decarbonisation.
 
Based from their office in central London, the client aims to disrupt traditional energy supply models by providing true renewable energy solutions to IPU’s globally, generating a positive impact for all stakeholders.
 
They are backed by a €Multi-billion French-based private asset manager with significant experience in the renewable energy sector who have supported them through the exciting scale-up phase of their journey and beyond.

About the Role
 
The client is seeking a highly skilled Financial Associate with expertise in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to join their team.
 
The ideal candidate will play a key role in developing financial models, conducting investment analysis, and supporting strategic decision-making for renewable energy projects, which will include energy storage projects but also solar PV, rooftop solar, onshore wind and other technologies.
 
This position also requires a strong understanding of financial modelling, energy markets, and project financing.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
  • Develop and maintain complex financial models for battery energy storage and other renewable energy projects, incorporating revenue streams, operational costs, and financing structures.
  • A strong background of project finance models incorporating project development with crucial project financing workstreams including equity and debt structures.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis, including discounted cash flow (DCF), return on investment (ROI), net present value (NPV), and internal rate of return (IRR) calculations.
  • Evaluate and assess market trends, revenue forecasts, and policy implications affecting BESS projects.
  • Support the structuring and negotiation of project financing, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and other commercial contracts.
  • Conduct scenario and sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of market and regulatory changes on project feasibility.
  • Collaborate with development, commercial, and land teams to align financial models with technical and operational realities.
  • Analyse different use cases for BESS and assess their financial feasibility within renewable energy systems.
  • Present financial insights and recommendations to senior management and investors to facilitate informed decision-making.
  • Monitor and optimize project performance post-investment to maximize returns.
 
Qualifications & Experience
 
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in financial modelling, investment analysis, or project finance, preferably in the energy or infrastructure sector.
  • Proven experience working with battery energy storage systems (BESS), ideally from within a renewable energy development business.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel-based financial modelling, VBA, and other financial analysis to
  • Familiarity with energy market structures, revenue streams (capacity markets, ancillary services, arbitrage, etc.), and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of project finance structures, debt/equity financing, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret technical, regulatory, and commercial data to drive investment decisions.
  • Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial findings to stakeholders.
 
Preferred Skills
 
  • Understanding of battery storage technologies, lifecycle costs, and operational characteristic
  • Prior experience working with independent power producers (IPPs), utilities, or renewable energy developers.
  • Experience in the development of behind-the-meter renewable energy systems would be beneficial.
